St. Leonard's was consecrated by the Bishop of Edinbrugh on 24th May 1890.
On 7th May 1980 St. Leonard's was formally linked with our sister church St. Mary The Virgin in Dalkeith. Both Churches are members of the Scottish Episcopal Church and are therefore part of the world wide Anglican communion.
Our Congregation
The number of people attending the service each Sunday is normally between 30 and 50, so we regard ourselves as a friendly and welcoming family sized church. We are currently working at ways to engage with children, young people and young adults through diversifying our worship and hope to offer new clubs and activities for them.
Our Activities and Outreach
Many of our members are very involved in the organisations, groups and activities which are an integral part of our church life, a number of which are concerned with helping and supporting others both in our own community and further a field.
The following are the activities which are currently actively participated in and supported by us: Action Aid; Action by Christians Against Torture; Age Concern; Blythwood shoebox collection; Christian Aid; Cursillo; Food for the homeless; Healing Group; House Groups; Men's Fellowship Group; Prayer-centred Outreach in the community; Traidcraft;Tuesday Club for housebound, infirm and elderly in the community. In addition to the above, we have built close links with our local primary schools, secondary and special needs Schools. our Rector is Chaplain to one of the Local Primary Schools as well as Chaplin to Saltersgate Special Needs School.
Our Aspirations
We have a reputation of being a friendly, caring and welcoming congregation with a good relationship with our local community as a result of our outreach.
We plan to continue to raise our profile and enlarge our active congregation, particularly younger adults with young children, as key objectives for the well-being of our Church and community. Through diversity in worship, we also seek a greater depth of spirituality for ourselves, leading to increased confidence for our own involvement in our worship and ability to profess our faith and our beliefs for the benefit of all.
